For “from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen” (Romans 11:36).
Lord increase my little faith!
The apostles said to the Lord, "Increase our faith!" And the Lord said, "If you had faith like a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, 'Be uprooted and be planted in the sea,' and it would obey you." Luke 17: 5-6
From multiple scriptures, I have learned that a mustard seed's faith could move a large tree and even mountains to the sea - something certainly impossible for our human capabilities. Therefore, knowing what small faith can do, I settle for it; when I pray for faith, I usually ask the Lord to bless me with a mustard seed's faith. When I was in the School of Spiritual Direction, we were assigned to pray for the grace of a deeper desire for a living faith. I chose to pray on Hebrews 11: 1-6. My meditation time focused on verse 6, "without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and he rewards those who earnestly seek him."
I started my hour of prayer by begging the Lord for the faith of a mustard seed. I have a great desire to please God, as noted in my chosen scripture. As I continued to meditate on this particular scripture, I realized the Lord wanted something bigger and better than this mustard seed faith for me. On the other hand, I honestly thought the mustard seed's faith was all I needed. Then the Lord spoke to my heart and soul: He wants me to water the mustard seed with prayer and love until it becomes a tree. He does not want me to settle for "just a mustard seed faith". Instead, he desires for me to strive for a deeply rooted faith in Him - a faith that cannot be shaken by the storm of life. You see, a mustard seed fallen in the ground can be blown away by the wind, but it cannot be moved if deeply rooted.
Although I am still tempted to pray for a mustard seed's faith, now I say, "Lord, increase my little faith". I leave it up to Him to bless me with what He thinks I need. I know that if I step in faith in my daily walk with God, He will do the rest – for as He said, he rewards those who earnestly seek Him (Hebrews 11:6). Faith accomplishes the impossible and the supernatural through the power of God. If you can do miracles with a mustard seed faith, think about the endless possibilities of what you can do with a bigger and stronger faith in the Lord. We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13).
Prayer: Lord Jesus, increase my little faith and trust in you. It is in your name, I pray. Amen.
