Many parents have their roles mixed up. To be seen as "cool, modern, fun, up-to-date", they have forgotten that their role is not to be friends with their children, at least not during their early ages. But rather they are to provide the loving, caring, teaching, authoritative environment for their children to grow values, personal skills and be accountable of their actions. You cannot expect a child to be a respectful adult if there were no boundaries growing up.
There will come a time when they will encounter reality and seek answers. But in the process they should not see you parents as a hang-out buddy and not take you seriously. Instead all the rules and principles you gave them will help them to see in you stability because friends will come and go in their lives. But the teachings from their parents will guide them whether they are still around you or live far away.
